Penguins appear to have become successful, marketable products in recent years. The recent fad of using animated penguins as an advertising tool is best described by advertising consultant Michael Megalli: "There's something about these little guys.”

Animated penguins have overtaken the advertising market, box office, apparel, book market and online games and content. Animated penguins had starring roles in full feature animated films such as “Happy Feet,” “Madagascar,” as well as a non-animated feature film “March of the Penguins.” In 2006, the release of “Happy Feet” saw a meteoric rise to the top of the box office. Film reviewer Dan Goodman noted the unexpected phenomenon, "a group of cartoon penguins got the better of Agent 007." The dominance of animated penguins over classic movie genres, such as the James Bond franchise, was not anticipated in box office figures.

The use of animated penguins is not entirely new. In the past, Dawn's dishwashing detergent, Hallmark Cards and National Geographic have used advertising campaigns featuring animated penguins. A more recent campaign featuring animated penguins was that of the Coca Cola company. In 2005, a Coca Cola commercial brought together animated penguins and polar bears for a holiday advertising campaign. The animated penguins campaign was so successful with consumers, they revived the theme and used the Coca Cola commercial again during the 2006 holiday season. Another Coca Cola commercial featuring penguins is in the works for the upcoming holiday season.

Fans of animated penguins have usually been a younger audience. Cartoon penguins are part of children's' television viewing with characters like the Batman penguin. The animated Batman penguin is a character on Batman: The Animated Series, named Oswald Chester Cobblepot, or The Penguin. Though he is an atypical version of the usually innocent penguin image, the Batman penguin character has been well received.

"3-2-1 Penguins!" is also another leading animated series about cartoon penguins. "3-2-1 Penguins!" is the Christian-themed animated series available on VHS and DVD. The series is about the adventures of two children taught Bible inspired lessons about life by four animated penguins. It is produced by BIG IDEA Productions, which also produces another cartoon series called "Veggietales." After a production halt in 2003, BIG IDEA has announced their plan to produce 20 new episodes of the "3-2-1 Penguins!" series.

There are also online games that feature penguins, such as the Poke the Penguin series. The game invites players to poke the penguin until it reacts. The popularity of this game has actually propelled apparel with Poke the Penguin graphics.

Animated penguins will continue to dominate advertising and other media; they are distinctive animals the public relates to in some way. They remain a staple of society as an easily recognizable bird. Their identity of being innocent creatures whose natural habitat is in the polar regions also reminds society of the effects of global warming on helpless animals. Whatever the reason, Stuart Elliot has declared this year as "the year of the penguin."
